THE BENINTENDE FAMILY

FROM ITALY TO THE WORLD

The Benintende name can be found in the earliest of the Italian history pages.  A relatively small family that has become an international name in many countries. Many of the Benintende's from around the world are now getting together after generations of immigration to many countries.

We have noticed that many of the Benintende's found on the Internet,  seem to be involved with the art's and the betterment of their community, no matter what country they live in.

Two of these Benintende's, one in America, Joseph "Joe B." Benintende and another in Germany and Italy, Salvatore Benintende have begun the process of bringing all Benintende's together for the first time in history.

Our New Orleans, Louisiana Benintende family began with my Great Grandfather "Giuseppe Benintende" who came to America at the age of 52 years old from Calascibetta, Italy in 1905. He and his oldest son Mariano "Mike" age 29 came across on the ship "Fusrt Bismark" in 1905, settled up in North United States, but because of the cold, migrated to the South and began farming in Gulfport Mississippi and then the family eventually migrated to New Orleans. Now this branch of the Benintende's live all over the Untied States.
If you are a Benintende and find this on the Internet please send us a photo of yourself and brief history of your immediate family and we will post it here and eventually in the near future will dedicate an entire site to the Benintende name. Please fill out of the form below and we will contact you immediately.

Father Joseph Benintende ,New York

Father Joseph Benintende from New York has been so gracious as to share his Benintende family story with us. His grandfather, Guiseppe Benintende, was born on October 6, 1888 in Leonforte, Sicily.  He had three siblings - Isidoro, Sara and Teresa.  He married Mary Rossi on Nov. 11, 1919 in NYC.  My grandparents had three children Charles (who died in 2002 and is buried in Walton, NY), Michael - who is my father and married Betty Beardslee on Oct. 3, 1942 and died Feb. 25, 1994 and is buried in Walton, NY) and Rose Gargiulo who was born July 3, 1928 and is presently living in Brooklyn, NY.  My grandfather, Guiseppe, worked as a tailor in Manhattan and in Brooklyn, NY.  My grandparents lived in the New York City area - and Guiseppe died on July 7, 1971 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, my Grandmother, Mary, died on May 11, 1994 in Walton, NY and is buried in the cemetery there.
Charles Benintende, my uncle left no children when he died.
My father, Michael, had five children - all are living... I , Joseph, am the oldest, and am a Catholic Priest living in Oneonta, NY; my brother Charles, lives with his wife Millie in Wilmington, DE.  My sister, Marie is married to Ed Roenelt and lives in Stockholm, NJ - she has three children.  My brother Michael lives in Mc Keesport, PA with his wife Susan and they have two children; my youngest sister is Isabelle and she is married to Caspare Caratelli and they have no children - my Mom, Betty Benintende, lives with Isabelle and Casey.
Guiseppe and Mary's youngest child, Rose is married to Gus Garguilo and they live in Brooklyn, NY and are the parents of two children.
I hope that this adds some details to the history of the Benintende Family

GREETINGS !    Saluti!     ¡Saludos!     Grüße!
Hello This is Giuseppe Joseph "Joe B." Benintende and my wife Lila. I am the author and designer of the BENINTENDE.org site and thank everyone for all your sharing and spreading of the Benintende web site word. I hope this helps all of you as much as it does me. Peace !!
When I first started searching for Benintende's on the internet, there were ZERO web sites that listed, named or were about a Benintende, NOTHING !
Today there are HUNDREDS of web sites and everytime I find a new one, I make my best attempt to contact them and get them listed here.
I can truly say I am so blessed that everyone you see on this site I have become very close with, like family ! Of course non of us actually know how our Benintende names connect yet. Or if you would like to contact a Benintende you see here, let me know.
Please enjoy looking below and getting to know the Benintende's around the world either below or on another page. My father and I will be going to Italy and Sicily soon and I will continue my search as I kiss the ground from which we came.
Thanks, Giuseppe "Joseph" & Lila Benintende

DESCENDANTS OF CARMELO AND ISIDORO BENINTENDE
Information kindly provided by Edward (Ed) Benintede's wife, Joni-oye

Carmelo Benintende, the family patriarch, and his son, Isidoro (my
husband's grandfather) did not discuss family details back in Italy, like a lot of our Benintende family's.
Carmelo Benintende had  four or five children: Sara, Teresa, Isidoro,
Guiseppe and maybe Concetta (I'll have to confirm this).
Isidoro came to the U.S. in 1906 from Leonforte, Sicily.  The family
story is that he came with his bride, Carmela Inqui, but she is not
registered on the same ship as he according to Ellisisland.org. In any
case, he returned to Sicily and came back to the U.S. with his siblings
in 1912. They lived in New York. The sisters married and had families--
Father Joseph Benintende of NY that you have on your website is the son
of one of the sisters. Guiseppe moved to the Staten Island area and the
family seems to have lost touch with him. Tabetha Benintende,is possibly related to this Guiseppe since her
family is originally from Staten Island.

Isidoro had a tailoring business. They lived in Cliffside Park, NJ. He
had 5 sons and one daughter: Carmelo (Charlie), Giacchino, Paul, Jack,
Rose and Edward.. Family story says that Giacchino died as a baby,
either in Sicily, or possibly at sea enroute to the U.S. with his
grandfather Carmelo in 1913. Carmelo immigrated at the age of 70 and
lived with Isidoro until his death.
Charlie married twice and had a daughter, Lynne from his first marriage
and a daughter Carol from the second. Paul married and died in World War
II, leaving behind a son, Paul, who has not been heard from by family
since the late 1950s, early 60s. Jack married and had two children, Jack
and Joyce. Rose married and had two sons, Edward and Paul.

Edward, the youngest, is the last of Isidoro's children still living.
He is my husband, Ed's father. (Too many Edwards in this family!)  There
are four boys: Ed, Jim and two others. All are married and have
children. My husband Ed and I have two children: Miya and Emma. We live
in Stroudsburg, PA. Recently my father in law was contacted by one of
his cousins, a daughter of one of Isidoro's sisters. They have talked of
getting together, but they are all so elderly....

My husband's father once wrote down some of his family history.
Unfortunately, one of my daughters has it at the moment, but when I get
it back, I can fill in whatever detail I might have omitted here. He did
mention that there was a famous musician in the family.

So, I hope this information might light up a part of the family tree
that has been in the dark. I suspect that many of the Benintendes around
the country are related somehow, but if the older generations aren't
talking, it will be tough to be sure how.

My BENINTENDE Family

Our New Orleans, Louisiana Benintende family began with my Great Grandfather "Giuseppe Benintende" who came to America at the age of 52 years old from Calascibetta, Italy in 1905. He and his oldest son Mariano "Mike" age 29 came across on the ship "Fusrt Bismark" in 1905, settled up in North United States, but because of the cold, migrated to the South and began farming in Gulfport Mississippi and then the family eventually migrated to New Orleans. Now this branch of the Benintende's live all over the Untied States. My Grandfather and Grandmother A.J. (Benny) Benintende and Anna Becker Benintende had 4 children. A.J. (Alfred Josaeph Benintende Jr.) and his wife Virginia Rhudy Benintende, Victor (Vic)Benintende and his wife Mary Benintende, Robert (Bobby) and his wife Patricia Benintende and Carolyn Benintende Chenvert. A.J. Jr., is my father and I have been the third most of my life However, as we now know finding my Great Grandfather indeed had the same name, so in reality I am the fourth, I am Alfred Giuseppe Joseph "Joe B." Benintende IV. You will find a tab to the left to find pictures our Benintende's !

My Grandfather,, My Father and myself
Zane Benintende Grandson to Francesco
ZANE BENINTENDE
(This is my Hero - Joe B.)

I am Francis J. Benintende from Florida and here is what I know about my Benintende's, I will start with my pride and joy, ZANE !

Subject: a challenged child who was born with Waardenburg Syndrome

Zane, who is a challenged child who was born with Waardenburg Syndro
me (http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/waard.asp) (10/20/95) that resulted in profound, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss at birth.

Zane’s personal web site is : ( http://where2now.spaces.msn.com/ )

One of his national news story on Zane can be found at: ( http://www.clarkeschool.org/content/Clarke_Jacksonville/JAX.php )

As this new school year begins, we would like to give Zane additional incentives to pursue his goals to overcome his challenges and be mainstreamed into society. I would like to reward him with personal “2008 - 2009 Academic Achievement“ gifts. This is preparing him for his newer challenges in which the curriculum completely changes and the academic challenges are more complex for him to start to understanding multi tasking.
Fortunately, he now has a cochlear implant (http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/coch.asp) that enables him to hear, and we have him in a private clinical elementary school and special educational tutoring.

Zane also has something in very common with the celebrities listed belo
w, “Heterochromia”, two different color eyes. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterochromia_iridium)

In our case, Zane has a right eye that is blue with one streak of brown at “twelve o’clock high” brown, and his left eye is brown.

At twelve years old, he is going through a very difficult time were children are calling attention to him, making him very uncomfortable and very self conscious. We tell him that very famous people just li
ke David Bowie, Christopher Walken, Kate Bosworth, Mila Kunis, Jane Seymour and Keifer Sutherland have the same similarities with their eyes. Also, that the 1995 Miss America, Heather Whitestone and the radio announcer, Rush Limbaugh have cochlear implants and Zane should not discouraged when people make fun of him.
He was named after the famous author, Zane Grey. (http://www.zanegreysws.org/zgwsmenu.htm)

We were fortunate to have him qualify and receive a cochlear implant, (Cochlear Corporation - Nucleus 24) (http://www.cochlearamericas.com/index.asp) when he was two years and two months old at The Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Miami /Jackson Memorial Medical Center by Dr. Tom Balkany. (The Department of Otolaryngology Chairman).

Then, he had emergency surgery at three years old when there were complications to his implanted receiver due to a cut to his head, caused by his transmitter. Zane goes every four months to The University of Miami / Department of Otolaryngology to get his cochlear processor electronically remapped by their audiologists. (It is like a tune-up for a car). (http://otolaryngology.med.miami.edu/clinical_ear_audiology.asp)

Beside Zane having Waardenburg Syndrome, he requires special assistance for ADHD and Dyslexia. We stress that their are very famous people just li
ke Albert Einstein, Jay Leo, Muhammad Ali, Tom Cruise, Henry Winkler and Sir Jackie Stewart, that have the same challenges (http://www.dyslexia.com/qafame.htm). Additional difficulties were found in five other main areas: auditory and verbal processing, attention, verbal and visual memory, sensorimotor, and graphomotor abilities.

He has had either Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy for two days a week for the past seven years without a break.

For the next five years he will have to go to private “clinical schools” for his education and always take summer school classes, which will enable him to be properly “mainstreamed” into society.

Leaving him little or no time to be a “little boy”.

The officer on the left is my father.  Also there is a book written around 1968 – 1973 about my father and the other 1936 Olympic stars, captured Italians in the same officers prison of war camp.  One our close friends of many years is Mr. Marelli, who also was in the prison of war camp with my dad.

My Mother:
Irma Caquatto was born in Turino, Italy. Worked for Westinghouse Electric Company (Pittsburgh, PA) in the Foreign Department during World War II as the Assistant to the President of Foreign Affairs and was the interrupter for German, French, and Italian captured documentation.

She and my father were liaisons between Magneti Marelli and Westinghouse Electric Company in the and 1960’s and 1970’s.

Her father (Zane’s Grandfather), Dominic Caquatto, was born in Turino, Italy and was awarded the second highest military honor, “The Metal of Valor”  during “The Ethiopian War”  (1911-1912)

Benintende Spelling Variations Found
We are beginning to come into contact with several large groups in the United States who appear to come from the same region in Italy and Sicily with variations of spelling. We have found Benintend's with no "i" or "e" and Benintendi's with an "i" and of course those of us with Benintende's with an "e". Does anyone have a clue or story as to why there is a difference in the last letter of these names and how

they are connected ? As an example below you will see a group of photo's sent to us from a member of the Benintend"i" with an " i ", sent some great family photo's of their family lineage.

If any of you have ever done a search on the Benintende name, Barry's name has popped up, Barry belongs to the "California" Benintende's and has been a very respected author and Publisher on the west coast of the United States for a very long time. Probably you saw him as Editor of La Jolla Light. Chris who is also listed on this page is Barry's brother. They both saddly lost their father Joseph Benintende not long ago. He was such a great fellow, I actually got to speak to him on the phone years ago, when we first started this project, he was one of the first Benintende's we found and communicated with. I actually met Barry by accident when I was Tour Manager for Greg Allman and Barry was reviewing the show for the paperin  Sacremento I think, probably in 1994.
